Bulgaria is frequented by tourists year-round because of its famed sandy beaches on the Black Sea Coast. It’s also a paradise for hikers as the Balkan Mountains stretch through central Bulgaria. In fact, the Central Balkan Park is one of the largest and most protected areas in the entire European Union.

One of the oldest states in Europe, Bulgaria was founded in 681 but didn’t enter the European Union until 2007. The country is filled with beautiful historic ruins and known for its elaborate religious murals crafted in the 19th century. Today, 85% of the population are Orthodox Christians.

With a population of 7.6 million, Bulgaria is known for exporting light industrial products, food and wine. Few people may realize that yogurt is said to have originated in Bulgaria over 5,000 years ago and the residents credit yogurt with their health and longevity.

Politically, Bulgaria has a National Assembly consisting of 240 members who are elected for a four year period.

Recently, the government has announced its aim to attract even more tourists to this country of extreme natural beauty.
